Mussel Farming


Agricultural cultivation in our region is developed and two of the most famous products are: Mussels, from Lake Butrint and Mandarins, from the land of tangerines in Konispol. We also call the mussel the Queen of Butrint Lake as it is the most important product that the lake has, every action that is done in the lake is done by "advising" it. The mussel farming industry started in the 1960s, it has been a developed and well, organized industry. Butrint mussel was exported and characterized by high quality. Also in that period, the conservation of mussels started, which were used for the local market as well as for export.

Currently, the mussel is used as a consumer product and as a tourist product through the offer of the "Meeting Our Queen" experience (Link to the Mussel Tour experience page), a unique experience, the tourist sails on traditional farmers' boats, is involved in the mussel cultivation process and enjoy authentic mussel dishes.

Mandarin Farm


In the same area near the National Park of Butrint across the canal of Vivar, there are lands of Tangerines, fields and hills planted with mandarins. The land of tangerines is located in the municipality of Konispoli(Konispoli Municipality Link) and the villages that cultivate mandarines are: Vrina, Shëndëlli, Xarra, Mursi and Shkalla.

Mandarin cultivation is now also a tourist product, where tourists visit farms, get involved in fruit harvesting, learn how Mandarin is cultivated and enjoy lunch with traditional dishes cooked by the women of the area. Experience "Mandarin Farmers" (Link to the Mandarina Tour experience page).

Itinerary

We met our guide at Lake Port in Ksamil and climbed aboard his pride and joy, a traditional style mussel boat which took us across Lake Butrint. He explained in perfect English how the mussels are grown and harvested. The location is very beautiful as the lake is protected and birds and fish are plentiful. Indeed, the only human presence is local fisherman using handlines with mussel shacks dotting the shoreline. We took turns to clean the mussels and learned about removing the ‘beard’ from each shell. Shortly we arrived on the far shore and were greeted with a warm welcome from locals who had set a table in the shade. Wafting delicious smells were in the air. Wine and cold water was served and a fine feast of mussels was presented. A plate of grapes and more wine followed. Our only company, a dog and a cat who slept at a polite distance. There was adequate washing and toilet facilities. It was a perfect afternoon with the sun setting on our return, offering us a glorious sunset for dessert. We went with another couple and all agreed it was very good value for money and something very different and quite unique. Certainly not hackneyed tourism. I thoroughly recommend this tour, educational and gastronomic. You almost feel you are experiencing what the ancients enjoyed. You can’t put a price on pure, delicious simplicity.

Together with our grandma, you will join us in preparing our renowned traditional dish, Lakror. First, you will be greeted with our traditional drink, Narden, before immersing yourself in the process of crafting Lakror. Our grandma will be our guiding light on this authentic culinary journey; each of us will contribute, from preparing the sauce to kneading the dough. Additionally, some of us will take part in creating Fergesa, another delectable traditional dish, perfectly complemented by homemade bread.

A two hours experience in the center of Ksamil, at workshop of the famous local master. The master will teach you how to create your own mosaic based on a unique ancient technique combined with modern designs. After finishing the mosaic, you will take it as a souvenir. During the experience local drink and snack will be served to you. This experience fits perfect for you that are willing to learn our culture, our tradition and take part of it on your way back to your home.

Itinerary

Ksamil to the land of tangerines.

Meeting with the farmers, they will gave us se basic information how to gather tangerines, one hour work, fun and learning will be.

We will enjoy a delicious traditional lunch, whilst enjoying a perfect view to the plantation and beyond.

During the lunch, we'll learn more about tangerines, the season, soil, geographic position, climate and perhaps some old stories.
